And then there were the two television revolutions — colour TV arrived in , a blessing that meant we could fully appreciate the spectacle when cricketers started playing in their pyjamas in the Kerry Packer-orchestrated upending of televised sport in It was certainly a golden age for Packer: he rounded out a triumphant decade with his gamble on a high-gloss, high-cost experiment on Sunday nights. It soldiers on still, if somewhat battered and bruised.
It was everywhere, and it was emblematic of a puffed-up peacock of a decade defined mostly by the globe-straddling juggernauts coming out of Hollywood.
