There are no walking skeletons, giant grasshoppers, or donut-shaped spacecraft in the book. Really light hearted, fast reading, maybe at times more fantasy than science fiction novel by one of the masters of science fiction. Though it is a kind of murder mystery, it is not a novel that takes itself seriously at all nor it is in the least bit dark or violent.

Basically, if I had one word for the book, it would be the word shenanigans. Set in some indeterminate far future Earth, specifically at a college campus in Wisconsin, the main character is a college professor who has returned from a research project on a faraway planet, a man named Peter Maxwell. Having beamed home, ready to resume his life, studying mythological creatures, he discovers that in fact he had already returned home weeks ago, resumed his life, and apparently died and been buried, with absolutely no one mistaking who they had buried.

Maxwell is understandably curious who that other version of himself was was it basically a transporter accident that created another version of him or had it been a deliberate creation? There is a mystery to be sure, and not just the whys of a doppelganger Maxwell and who killed this other Maxwell, as there are other mysteries.

There are shenanigans too, lost of them. The novel throws a lot at you fast in terms of world building; there is nearly instantaneous interstellar travel through basically Star Trek like transporters, many alien species exist and a number run around on Earth as students or what not, time travel exists, bio-mech engineered lifeforms exist, and as mentioned, faerie, trolls, goblins, ghosts and banshees are real beings, most living on a reservation in Wisconsin, a few like Ghost running around and doing as they wish.

The novel has a very light, almost irreverent tone and in feel is like the madcap comedies of the s and s. At its heart there is some real science fiction involving a couple of mysterious alien civilizations, one of them the Wheelers, basically communal insect alien beings, another aliens from a crystal planet of unimaginable age.

Pacing was really good, though some of the lesser human characters could be kind of colorless and forgettable. The aliens themselves were often neat though I think the Little Folk were a bit underdeveloped and given the title of the book, I thought would figure into the story more.

It was a cute book. It was a great pick me up read that took my mind off of actual academic routine. It starts up fairly seriously and then becomes just sillier and sillier.

All character were extremely lovable, especially Sylvester. Now I want Sylvester too! I enjoyed the book and would have been happy to rate it 3 stars, but parts from it kept coming back into my and I even dreamt of it, so 4 stars for haunting me. The plot seems to turn down a fair few blind aleys as it meander to the finish line but I admired the architecture en route.

He struggles with the social and legal shutdown of his life and property, and falls upon his unlikely circle of friends as he tries to figure out what happened. The pace quickens as unlikely characters and outlandish occurrences compound to the point of exasperation. On a personal note, I was pleased to see that the main campus of the University of Earth is located in Madison, Wisconsin.

The Union building and the shoreline of Lake Mendota, that I know well, figure prominently, as does a Goblin Reservation that has been situated on the bluffs of the Wisconsin River where Simak grew up. It might be worth considering how different this fictional campus is from the reality of the UW campus, with its major anti-war marches and subsequent bombing of Sterling Hall. Aug 24, Kit Door rated it it was amazing.

A perfect mix of fantasy, murder mystery, and the hard sci fi Simak is famous for. It's probably one of the best sci fi books ever written. In the future, the entire planet Earth is the university of the galaxy, with a College of Supernatural Phenomenon, as well as, a College of Time travel.

Lately I have been searching and searching for a book to read. Going around in circles.. One day while playing under the Explore tab on here GR under lists Listopia I ran across this: readharder.

So I checked out the books under each number for the challenge and realized that some books on my TBR were on the list.. So this is Number 4 Read a Funny Bk. I had a hard time again picking a book so.. Smarter, funnier, and less sexist than most of those old men. I love the homage to the Wisconsin countryside. This is a mystery - don't be frustrated by how confused you are throughout. Do pay attention, and then enjoy the climax and the ending.

He is confused as to why this is.. This is only the beginning.. I thought it tied in theme wise.. Sep 08, Terence Blake rated it really liked it. This novel is difficult to situate within the categories of today's science fiction and within Simak's oeuvre.

It belongs to the genre of science fantasy, in that the fantastical beings, powers, and events receive a sort of scientific explanation. There is also an outrageous sense of humour that we associate more with Robert Sheckley or Douglas Adams, only a little slower as befits Simak's style. The whole story revolves around a man commissioned to broker a deal for the purchase of a reposito This novel is difficult to situate within the categories of today's science fiction and within Simak's oeuvre.

The whole story revolves around a man commissioned to broker a deal for the purchase of a repository of knowledge from the previous universe, prior to our Big Bang, and from our own universe's long history up to now.

The antics revolve around a coarse but loveable Neanderthal retrieved from the past by time travel , a sabre toothed tiger produced as a pet by bio-mechanical engineering , teleportation, time travel, goblins versus trolls, a ghost who has forgotten who he used to be when alive, and villainous aliens in the form of hives of insects on wheels.

A space opera universe as background to the action, which takes place mainly on Earth. This is more a long novella than a novel, by today's standards. It is a fast and enjoyable read, although perhaps a bit lacking in the intellectual depth we expect from Simak. Aug 06, Dan rated it really liked it. This novel is filled with a cornucopia of characters, alien races and mythical creatures.

It is as much of a fantasy novel as a sci-fi novel. Now the plot is not terribly strong or convincing but the imagination factor is sky high in this whimsical novel. Simak is one of my favorite This novel is filled with a cornucopia of characters, alien races and mythical creatures. Dec 09, Ian Hamilton rated it liked it. More in the fantasy camp over the sci fi one, the Goblin Reservation has a charming cast of characters, but the story remains disappointedly whimsical.

Flawed, but a fun little novella that reinforces Simak's subtle brilliance. Jul 16, Beverly rated it really liked it Shelves: sci-fi-old. This ended up being an entertaining book, but I had my doubts at the start. It took almost the first half of the book to set up the plot and I struggled through that half. But, the last half was engaging and enjoyable. I look forward to reading more by this author. Nov 27, Chris Rigby rated it really liked it. The story centres on Peter Maxwell see, even the names are familiar , a Professor whose 'transportation pattern' is mysteriously duplicated, and he arrives back from a trip away to find his duplicate had arrived back earlier and mysteriously died.

Maxwell - having been buried and mourned - is now a man without an official identity, so his only recourse is to discover what happened to him, and why. This future Earth is one where The Little People of folklore actually exist and always have, though fleeing from mankind and his destructive ways. Maxwell enlists the help of O'Toole a goblin from the eponymous Reservation , the attractive Carol who is the new resident of his apartment, her bio-mechanical sabre-tooth tiger Sylvester, a Neanderthaler Alley Oop brought from the distant past by the Time Faculty of the University who clearly is more intelligent than he pretends to be.

And what - or who? Simak's 'classic' is "City", published some 15 years earlier when his writing style was more naive and self-conscious. By 'The Goblin Reservation', Simak's style has greatly matured, and there is an engaging irreverence almost Harry Harrison-esque about this novel, which makes it very readable, and absorbs the reader into its believable community of academics, time travellers, alien 'Wheelers', and centre-stage, the Little People.

Originally published on my blog here in August Simak is best remembered today for serious science fiction like Way Station , but he wrote several more whimsical novels, of which this is one.

It is still full of ideas, but these are presented to amuse rather than to make you think. The invention of a mechanism for time travel has led to some surprising discoveries, not least that creatures such as goblins and trolls had at one time really existed. Well treated, he is eventually returned to earth, only to find that he is believed dead; a second version of himself came back safe from his trip and then was killed in an accident. It doesn't have quite the excitement of Heinlein's writing, and also doesn't quite match up to the standard of Simak at his best, but it is still enjoyable.
